#002 – Super Symbol

On this episode of the Reel World Theology Podcast:

The Reel World Theology Podcast takes time to discuss the latest DC Comics offering, Man of Steel. Directed by Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) and produced by Christopher Nolan (The Dark Knight Trilogy), Man of Steel gave audiences a lot of promise for rebooting the Superman franchise. We take a look and see if DC nailed it or missed the mark.

Superman has always been a “Christ-like” figure since his early days in Action Comics. The film runs with that idea and is full of heavy-handed symbolism and also some very blatant metaphor. It was also able to garner a lot of media attention when its marketing included sermon packages and pre-screening invites for some church leaders. From there it picked up steam when audiences consumed the film and had a chance to react to the narratives of family, hope, destiny, good vs evil, and something I like to refer to as “space nazis.” We would also be doing everyone a disservice if we didn’t address the elephant in the room, “does Superman kill?”
