#004 – Not-So-Despicable Gru
On this episode of the Reel World Theology Podcast:
Gather the minions! This episode we tackle the animated movie Despicable Me 2. Which, by default, means that we also talk about Despicable Me. Which also means we talk about the impact that animated movies have on children and adults alike. We are all over the place trying to assess why and how we let kids consume entertainment and what some of the best ways to do so are.
Despicable Me 2 catches us up with Gru, Dr. Nefario, the girls, and the minions to see what they have been up to since they became one big happy family. Ultimately being a single dad to three little girls while trying to make a career change is not easy and as Gru tries to fend off being set up on dates by nosey neighbors we get to see his redemption through the new character of Lucy (another “doesn’t-fit-in” spy). By being teamed up to uncover a new, secret, super villain, Lucy slowly helps Gru face some self-doubt from his own past as the two hit it off. In the end, the movie is a relatable tale of struggling adults trying to find happiness in their own skin… and minion antics.
