Since we’re already focused on NEXT week and the opening of Avengers: Age of Ultron, this week could be considered a bit of a filler week leading up to every single theater in the world playing AoU on every important screen. However, there are some interesting, less known titles opening in wide release this week, as well as a couple intriguing limited releases and a coupe of those limited releases are available to rent already.

Opening In Wide Release

The Age of Adaline

After an accident in 1933 leaves Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) with the strange after effect of never aging, she becomes reclusive to avoid getting close to anyone. People age and die, yet she remains looking 29 years old. However, eighty years after the accident she meets a handsome and charming philanthropist (Michiel Huisman) who she falls in love with. When they meet his parents, Adaline is recognized by his father (Harrison Ford) who happens to be an old friend of Adaline’s from decades previous.

The premise seems interesting enough, even though the cast, minus Harrison Ford, is not all that intriguing. What Isbhard to get over is that the feel of the movie and the story seem like a Nicholas Sparks story that is not by the prolific romance author. Early reviews are not very strong but it might just be that perfect date movie for you fellas out there. But if you’re significant other doesn’t like these kind of movies, might I suggest Ex Machina, which rolls out to a wider release this weekend?

Little Boy

A faith-based film from Metanoia Films, it takes place during World War II and is the inspiring story of a father’s love for his son and the love a son has for his father. When Pepper Flynt Busbee’s (Jakob Salvati) father leaves to fight in World War II, he will do anything to end the war and get his father back. It looks to be a story of faith and family love and should be right in the wheelhouse of anyone who loves inspirational and faith-based movies. I’d be interested to see how this one turns out, so let us know if you check it out this weekend.

Opening In Limited Release

The Water Diviner

Starring the gruff and Australian Russell Crowe, The Water Diviner takes place shortly after the World War I Battle of Galipoli. Crowe is an Australian farmer who travels to Turkey, the site of the battle, to search for his three sons. There he meets Ayshe, the beautiful owner of the hotel where he is staying, played by Olga Kurylenko. Thinking his sons to be dead, he arrives hoping to bring them back and bury them only to find out that some of them may not be dead. It looks to be a story of a father’s love for his children and since Crowe almost never disappoints, this one is worth checking out if it is playing in your area.

Adult Beginners

Starring Nick Kroll (“The Douche” from Parks & Recreation) as a wealthy, young entrepreneur with a giant ego. When his life goes into chaos after his startup dissolves on the night before launch, he is forced to move in with his sister, her husband, and their three-year-old, where he becomes their nanny. It looks to be pretty funny and Nick Kroll has done some great comedy. It is getting mixed reviews, but mostly positive, and it is also available on iTunes starting Friday, April 24th. Check it out and let us know what you think of this indie comedy.

Misery Loves Comedy

This movie really piqued my interest and it is available on iTunes right now, so I snagged it up to watch tonight! Directed and written by Kevin Pollak (Casino, The Usual Suspects), he sought to build a documentary around the questions, “Do you have to be miserable to be funny?” What happens is that comedians, actors, filmmakers, and writers share their insights into that questions and Pollak just lets them tell stories. I absolutely love comedy, especially stand-up, and a lot of the people Pollak interviews are some of my favorite comedians of all-time; Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Coogan, Jim Gaffigan. I’m really looking forward to this movie and if you are at all interested in the premise or in some of the featured funny people, pick it up on Amazon or iTunes for $6.99 this weekend.
